Guided by the motto, “In practice and learning, unto principles and truths,” the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) is committed to nurturing high-calibre graduates with scientific rigour, humanistic awareness, and professional competence.
FST comprises four academic departments and offers nine undergraduate programmes: the Department of Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science and Technology); the Department of Life Sciences (Applied Psychology, Environmental Science, Food Science and Technology); the Department of Mathematical Sciences (Applied Mathematics, Financial Mathematics); and the Department of Statistics and Data Science (Data Science, Statistics). Additionally, the Faculty offers four taught master programmes: Master of Arts in Communication-Artificial Intelligence & Digital Media Concentration (AIDM), Master of Science in Sustainable Energy Technology and Management (SETM), Master of Science in Data Science with Concentration in Business Statistics (MSCBS) and Master of Science in Data Science with Concentration in Quantitative Finance and Risk Management (QFRM), along with five research postgraduate programmes in Applied Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science and Technology, and Probability and Mathematical Statistics.
FST is home to over 100 full-time faculty members recruited globally, with strong foundations in teaching and research. In recent years, the Faculty has continued to attract high-level talent and now includes nine chair professors alongside a growing number of emerging scholars. Faculty members have secured numerous research grants and multiple teaching awards. Eight have been recognized as Stanford/Elsevier World's Top 2% Scientists.
FST has made significant progress in disciplinary development. Computer Science and Technology and Statistics have been designated national top-tier undergraduate programmes, while Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science and Technology have been recognized as Guangdong key disciplines. The Faculty has also been approved by the Department of Education of Guangdong Province to establish the Innovative Experimental Zone for the Cultivation of Top Talents in Mathematics (Math+N). Two disciplines—Agricultural Sciences (Food Science and Engineering) and Engineering (Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Computer Science and Technology)—have entered the global top 1% of the Essential Science Indicators (ESI). The Faculty hosts major research platforms, including the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Interdisciplinary Research and Application for Data Science (IRADS) and the Guangdong Key Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence and Multi-Modal Data Processing. It has also been approved to establish two national postdoctoral programmes in Mathematics and Statistics.
FST embraces a student-centred educational philosophy. Students are encouraged to participate in academic competitions, research and internships, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The quality of student development is widely recognised: approximately 80% of undergraduates pursue further study at home or abroad each year, and more than 80% of these students are admitted to universities ranked among the world’s top 100, including the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, and Yale University. FST graduates are highly valued for their international outlook, solid professional competence, and well-rounded qualities. Drawing on the industrial strengths of the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), approximately 60% of employed graduates begin their careers with GBA enterprises, contributing to sectors such as internet technology, finance, education, biotechnology and beyond.
